I went to the zoo with my family today. We had a great day. It is amazing to get within inches of animals from around the world. Being a sunny afternoon, the zoo was extremely packed, but queuing didnt bother us. We were happy out eating ice-creams and strolling down the African Savanna. Then we reached the enclosure of the silverback gorilla. A stunning creature of enormous stature sauntered out of the shrubbery and--to the astonishment of us onlookers--lumbered over to the window. There was huge commotion with a throbbing crowd of people piling in to catch a glimpse. Or rather, to take a photo on their phone. Parents were shoving their children to the front and people accidentally stepping on each-others flip-flopped feet. Cameras flashed. All the while, behind the triple glazed glass pane, the large solitary silverback sat side facing us. He stared across his patch of grass with sad look in his deeply lined face. Staggeringly human-like. I no longer saw a towering beast behind the glass, I saw a broken one. That put a bit of a damper on the trip for me. But my ten year old brother Paul took some good photos. My favourite is the picture which blurred the animals face with the lady and her phone. Kind of captures what I was talking about.
