I went to visit my aunt Oralia. We stayed for a few days. Seems like an ordinary visit, right? I grew up separated from my family for decades. Its pretty much the same as being orphaned. When you have family around, it is an orphans dream come true. My grandparents are dead, but I am closer to who they were and my family history. That means a lot. My aunt doesnt celebrate Christmas, but she cooked a ham, a turkey, breakfast and made coffee. The kids got tons of gifts. We all slept in the room where my grandma slept during the final years of her life. My kids saw pictures of their great aunts and uncles back in the 50s and 60s, and even pictures of me when I was little. They saw their great grandparents and their great, great grandfather. We visited my childrens great grandparents in the cemetery. We took family pictures. I visited my husbands grandparents in their graves in China, and he visited mine here in Texas. *mind blown* But the biggest surprise came from someone totally unexpected. I havent seen my estranged dad in 10 years. I dont remember spending any Christmases with him EVER. But lo and behold, he bought gifts for my kids. My aunt, uncle took us to my dads place on Christmas Day, and we spent a couple hours catching up. It was nice. He met the kids and it was pretty cool. My aunt cooked us a great big breakfast for our trip back to Houston. I felt not only full of fuel, but full of love. She made it the best Christmas ever.
