I went today for the obligatory annual car-check ("Katsastus" in Finnish). No problem with the technical side at all, except a few funny things were pointed out to me: 1. Nothing is supposed to be hanging in front of you from the mirror, no decoration, no religious symbol or any decorative object, not even the so popular air-refresher Wunderbaum e.g.(I can live with that). This rule is a law and not a suggestion. 2. Is a bit more complicated. Stickers as a proof that you have paid your road toll (if using them) has to be clearly seen on the right side of your windscreen. The absence of such a visible proof leads to fines up to 300 € (at least in most European countries, except Finland, Estonia, Germany). In Finland it is strictly forbidden, by law to have anything attached to the windscreen. This rule is also a law and not a suggestion. The inspector had no solution for this problem whatsoever. Maybe one should not take his car abroad. Now, I have a problem with that! 3. Then we have the navigator. It is not supposed to be attached to any part of the glas (windscreen, side windows). Most navigators come with a suction cup to hold it in place on a glass surface. But this works only on glass and not on the plastic surface of the interior. Now, I have a problem with that too!! Now comes the best part: The suggestion was, to buy a car with a buit-in navigator. Fortunately the Carelians (my inspector was one) have sense of humour........ I think Finnish law makers should concentrate on more relevant things. Anyway, HYVÄÄ JUHANNUSTA (have a nice Midsummer)
