I will admit, I notice my own naive longing to feel comforted, and/or hopeful when I see this photo. I want to believe with all my heart that an inter-generational, inter-racial hug can or will make anything or something just a little better in these moments of almost unbearable grief. And, the same cop in this photo was involved in aggressive policing just hours later-I was there to see it. The Portland Police department is savvy in the way of creating a fictive narrative that goes beyond this moment, and with their continual, decontextualized dissemination of it. The white power-over status quo is fighting hard to keep us in the ranks of believers of fairy tale endings and of those easily soothed by feel-good moments.
