I will admit that I am sometimes caught in a bit of old(er) school thinking (as Jacob Tobia who Ive very proud to say now works for my team at Out Leadership, can attest). Im not quite there yet on using the word queer (it still takes me back to grade school taunts and probably always will), but I absolutely respect the next-generation of the LGBT communitys desire to reclaim the word. As to gender identity, I have friends and colleagues who prefer they/them, he/she interchangeably or even a friend who just wants you to choose the pronoun youd like--all of which is fine, as I believe its a persons choice as to how they want to be addressed and perceived. Gender fluidity is something that I think we will only see more of in the future, and is something worth understanding if you dont. At the very least, however, seeing some of the hateful comments that my friend Steven Petrows beautiful article on Jacob has elicited, reminds me that there is still very much an undercurrent of hatred against the LGBT community. Weve made a lot of progress (especially on marriage equality) but there is still so much work left to do. #lgbtprogress
