I will be welcoming in the Advent Season at church tomorrow with this exquisite setting of Behold, A Rose Is Blooming by Johannes Brahms. I have the most wonderful memories from my childhood of hearing this chorale prelude played numerous times at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church for various occasions. It was most often played as a service prelude on Sundays or at wedding ceremonies. Absolutely every organist who came through the church during my years at Pritchard played this piece. And each one of them played it beautifully in their own way. My fondest memories are hearing it played on the beautiful string stops of the E.M. Skinner pipe organ in the old sanctuary. It also sounded beautiful on the Casavant pipe organ in the new sanctuary and it sounds lovely on the organ at Saint Johns Church. The Sanctuary Choir will sing Lo, How A Rose Eer Blooming by Michael Praetorius and I will also play a contemporary setting of the hymn for the offertory. It is for piano and was written by Cindy Berry. I believe that we will start off the season in a most beautiful way. Have a nice evening...
