I will preach the following to the Hispanic community this Saturday. Here are English and Spanish versions. 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time, 2013C Luke 9: 18-24 Deacon Lee Hunt (St. Monica) Who Do You Say that I Am? Who do you say that Jesus is? I’m sure each of you has some kind of answer to this question. I’m also certain that your answers differ depending on your backgrounds. In today’s gospel, Jesus’ disciples had been with him for a while and had watched Jesus work miracles and reach out to the poor. Jesus wanted to know who the crowd thinks that he is. Not too surprising, the answers varied. Then Jesus asked the hard question to the disciples themselves: “But who do you think that I am?” Since we are Jesus’ disciples today, we also are challenged by this penetrating question. What is our answer? What is your answer? A course titled Christology is offered at the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center as part of the Pastoral Ministry Program. When I took the course, I read three books with intriguing titles like Who Is Jesus? Each author gave different insights into who Jesus is. Reading what several scholars wrote certainly expanded my idea of who Jesus is. So why would we want to learn more about Jesus? Jesus is the second person of the Trinity who actually lived among us to show us what God is like. To learn more about Jesus allows us to know more about God who loves so much that he send us the Son. Since God is love, knowing more about what Jesus did on earth allows us to love better and be more like God. It is through love that we can have enteral life with God. So how do we learn more about Jesus? Since different information about Jesus appears in the four Gospels, we can learn more about who Jesus is by attending Mass each Sunday and Feast Day and hear the Gospels proclaimed in our midst and hear homilies about what they mean. Well, this is only a start because we hear only 58% of the Gospels when we attend Mass on all of these days. Of course, we could also additionally attend Mass of all weekdays, and then hear 90% of the Gospels. This is a great improvement, but it can be difficult to attend Mass every day. Another option is to read the Gospels in your own copy of the Bible. Slowly I have been changing from the Bible on paper to on a computer to on a tablet. There are also many reflections on the Internet about how to live our lives according to the Gospels. Once we have a better understanding of Jesus, we could get a further perspective by reading a Christology book, several of which are published each year. Eventually, we have to move from the study phase to searching for the face of Jesus in others. I find Jesus in my own family, especially young grandchildren who are innocent and let me hug and kiss them. These have been some of my closest moments with Christ the last several years. I have become old enough to learn why grandparents are always talking about their grandchildren. I also learn more about Christ from this community, from you! Recently I returned from Peru and many of you expressed your concern to me about why I had not been here. The Hispanic community is a closer-knit community than the average Anglo community. Thank you for helping us remember to be more like Christ through your great witness! We can learn much about who Jesus is by serving the poor among us. We hear that Jesus has a preference for the poor, and our new Pope has been giving us great witness to this by what he says and what he does. Each Saturday morning the faces of Jesus walk through the doors of the Good Samaritan Health Clinic in Edmond. In serving the health uninsured, the volunteers become more like Jesus who came to serve, not to be served. Since 2003 I have been spending a week in northern Peru bringing hope to people who live on less than five dollars per day. These people lack basic material items that we take for granted, but they have great trust in God and show missionaries the face of Christ when they welcome us with much love. My mission trip each year is a spiritual retreat and brings me closer to Jesus because I receive so much more than I give. The trip is an annual reality check for me. So, who do you say that Jesus is? You can find out in the several ways that I mentioned. It takes effort to learn more about Jesus. Ultimately you will find Jesus living right here among us. Jesus is among us, you just have to look for him. Domingo 12 de tiempo ordinario, 2013C Lucas 9:18-2 Diácono Lee Hunt (Sta. Mónica) ¿Quién dicen ustedes que soy yo? ¿Quién dice usted que Jesús es? Estoy seguro que cada uno tiene algún tipo de respuesta a esta pregunta. También estoy cierto que sus respuestas son distintas, depende de sus experiencias. En el Evangelio para hoy, los discípulos de Jesús habían estado con él por un tiempo y habían visto a Jesús realizar milagros y extender el brazo a los pobres. Jesús quería saber lo que la multitud creía quién Jesús es. No es sorprendente que las respuestas variaban. Luego Jesús les hizo la pregunta difícil a los discípulos mismos: “Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?” Como somos los discípulos de Jesús hoy día, nosotros también somos desafiados con esta pregunta penetrante. ¿Qué es nuestra respuesta? ¿Qué es su respuesta? En el Centro Pastoral del Arquidiócesis se ofrece un curso que le llama Cristología como parte del Programa de Ministerio Pastoral. Cuando yo tomé el curso, leí tres libros con títulos intrigantes como ¿Quién es Jesús? Cada autor dio ideas distintas de quién es Jesús. Es cierto que leyendo lo que varios eruditos escribieron amplió mi idea de quién es Jesús. Bueno pues, ¿por qué desearíamos aprender más acerca de Jesús? Jesús es la segunda persona de la Trinidad que en realidad vivió entre nosotros para mostrarnos cómo es Dios. Aprendiendo más acerca de Jesús nos deja saber más acerca de Dios que nos ama tanto que nos mandó a su Hijo. Como Dios es amor, sabiendo más de lo que Jesús hizo aquí en la tierra nos permite amar mejor y ser más como Dios. Es por medio del amor que podemos tener la vida eterna con Dios. Entonces, ¿cómo aprendemos más acerca de Jesús? Ya que información distinta acerca de Jesús aparece en los cuatro Evangelios, podemos aprender más acerca de quién es Jesús con asistir a la Misa cada domingo y fiestas de guardar y oír las proclamaciones de los Evangelios y escuchar homilías acerca de lo que significan. Pues, esto es solo un comienzo porque solo oímos cincuenta y ocho por ciento de los Evangelios cuando asistimos a Misa todos estos días. Por supuesto, además podríamos asistir a Misa todos los días de la semana, y así oír noventa por ciento de los Evangelios. Esto sería una mejoría grande, pero puede ser difícil asistir a Misa cada día. Otra opción es leer los Evangelios en su propia Biblia. Lentamente he cambiado de leer mi propia Biblia, a leer en la computadora, y ahora leerla en iPad. También hay muchas reflexiones en internet acerca de cómo vivir nuestras vidas según los Evangelios. Una vez que tenemos un conocimiento mejor de Jesús, podríamos conseguir perspectivas adicionales leyendo un libro sobre Cristología varios de cuales se publican cada año. Eventualmente, debemos proceder de la fase del estudio al de buscar el rostro de Jesús en otros. Yo encuentro a Jesús en mi propia familia, especialmente en nietos jóvenes inocentes que me permiten abrazar y besarlos. Estos han sido algunos de mis momentos más cercanos con Cristo los últimos años pasados. He llegado a la edad cuando se comprende por qué los abuelos siempre están listos para hablar de sus nietos. También aprendo más acerca de Cristo de esta comunidad, ¡de ustedes! Recientemente regresé del Perú y muchos de ustedes mostraron su preocupación por mí a causa de que no había estado aquí. La comunidad hispana es más unida que el promedio de la comunidad anglo-americana. Por medio de su gran testimonio nos han ayudado a recordar ser más como Cristo. ¡Gracias! Podemos aprender mucho acerca de quién es Jesús cuando servimos a los pobres alrededor de nosotros. Oímos que Jesús tiene una preferencia para los pobres, y nuestro papa, recién elegido, nos ha mostrado gran testimonio de esto por lo que dice y hace. Cada sábado por la mañana los rostros de Jesús cruzan las puertas de la Clínica del Buen Samaritano en Edmond. Sirviendo a los que no tienen seguro de enfermedad, los voluntarios llegan a ser más como Jesús que vino a servir, no a ser servido. Desde dos mil tres, yo he pasado una semana en el norte del Perú. Traigo esperanza a la gente que vive con menos de cinco dólares por día. Esta gente carece de los artículos más básicos que nosotros consideramos dado por supuesto. Pero ellos tienen mucha confianza en Dios y ellos les muestran a los misionarios el rostro de Cristo cuando nos dan la bienvenida con mucho amor. Cada año, mi viaje misionero es un retiro espiritual y me trae más cerca a Jesús porque recibo mucho más de lo que doy. El viaje es una revisión de la realidad para mí. Bueno, ¿quién dice usted que es Jesús? Usted puede enterarse en varias maneras que yo mencioné. Debemos hacer un esfuerzo para aprender más acerca de Jesús. Finalmente usted va a encontrar a Jesús aquí mismo entre nosotros. Jesús está entre nosotros, solo tiene (tenemos) que buscarlo.
