I will put the documents under Files Dear Mission Bay Cluster, There is a significant change that is on the horizon at SDUSD and we wanted to make sure the MB Cluster stays informed. The District Calendar Committee will be presenting the new proposed SDUSD traditional school calendar for the years 2015-16 and 2016-17 at the November 18th Board of Education meeting for discussion and potential approval. This is a two-year proposal only, not a permanent change. The proposal for 2015-16, is that the school year begin on August 31 (before Labor Day) and end on June 13. In 2016-17, the school year would start on August 29 and end on June 12. Please see attached documents for further details. The SDUSD rationale behind the proposal: In 2015, Labor Day is September 7th. If the calendar is not changed, school will not start until Sept. 8 and the school year would go until June 20. With the new calendar proposed, school will start August 31 and end June 13. SDUSD is 1 of only 2 districts that start after Labor Day (see calendar matrix attachment) - Poway, Carlsbad, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Chula Vista, San Dieguito and other districts all start in August. Starting earlier will provide students with more instructional time prior to AP and IB testing and therefore may be an advantage for our students. Conversely, starting later could be a disadvantage for SDUSD students. Athletics are aligned with neighboring districts (CIF games begin in August) The earlier start is more closely aligned with SD Community College academic calendar (easier transition for graduating senior to attend) Expanded opportunities for incoming and exiting seniors to participate in early summer pre-collegiate programs or classes At the MB Cluster meeting, there was no consensus regarding the proposal, as many saw the merits of an earlier start, BUT there was broad concern that the process in developing the proposal had not included enough stakeholder input. This change will come as a huge surprise to most everyone in our cluster and across the district. If you would like to weigh in about the District Calendar Committee process or the proposal itself, please send your thoughts to: - Chair of the District Calendar Committee: Becky Phillpott - [email protected] - Director of Communications, District Calendar Committee: Linda Zintz - [email protected] Thank you everyone, Maria Mikus MB Cluster Chair 14-15
