I will say that it is immensely important here to understand that the issue is much broader than what is stated here. Black men definitely have some culpability in this as well. Where as I agree 100 percent that the system has used professional success to create a form of role reversal and move the women into positions that have historically been held by men, I must also admit that some men voluntarily abdicated their role as leaders, protectors and providers. Where my concern lies with this is in the fact that those women who have experienced the type of success that this sister speaks about may not understand the damage that has taken place and how it has impacted their relationships with men and how it has impacted the black family as a whole. With this success there comes a certain illusion of power that can distort the ability to see things lucidly. It is extremely difficult to accurately anatomize this video because it is only a snippet of the entire message, but going on what I was able to see and hear, it is not reflective of the complete role of a woman, even in ancient times. Whether one is a Christian, Muslim, Agnostic, or even atheist, they must give a certain credence to the historical reference that the Bible and Quran offers. Anyone who has participated in any serious study has to admit that there are some serious challenges with these ancient pieces of literature, especially in the way that they represent people of color; however, they still provide a powerful frame of reference for those who want to examine cultural practices and more. In examining a number of biblical scriptures, it is easy to determine that the woman (wife) was not relegated to domestic duty. One could read Proverbs 31:10-31 for clarification. This is not an argument for religion or to make a theological assertion, but it is to establish a cultural truth. The woman in this passage put in work, ran her own business and participated in business transactions. She was very rounded. What is also clear is she knew her role, and her actions, her work and her success never changed her primary role. There is a distinct difference between a persons role and the work and responsibilities they assume in that role. Although times have changed, the specific design of man and woman have not, meaning that we function optimally when we operate in our intended design.
