I will tell you a story… It is now two and a half decades since I was involved in a physical fight. I attribute this partly to my temperament but more so to the strong teachings of the Christian faith that instructs its followers to abhor quarrels, and Christ’s proclamation in the beatitudes that blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God. But I has a memorable fight in 1989 which was well designed and scheduled in advance. I was fighting Daniel, one of my classmates. Each one of us had a cheering squad and we proceeded to the designated fighting place. I know why I lost the fight in the end – because Daniel was not one of the cleanest boy in the class, and therefore I was fighting at an arm’s length to avoid an unplanned embrace. I, at least had two more fights in the same year, which I won without much injury apart from a torn shirt. But looking back, what was most remarkable is that in each of these fights, there was a designated time (mostly break time), and a designated fighting square. The LOOSER (almost) always ran away to a safe distance followed by his fans, and instead of conceding clearly and publicly to officially end the fight, he and his followers would begin to shout (the loudest) that they had won, shouting that (oh) the fight was unfair, (oh) that they were hit on the software, (oh) the slap was aligned with a piece of plywood. In almost all cases the LOOSER, would then pick lumped soils and stones and begin to throw to the winner, always trying to stage an alternative win, OUTSIDE the designated fighting time, OUTSIDE the designated fighting place. Then amid all the shouts, the bell would ring, we would go back to class, and then life would continue…Until another scheduled fight.
