I wish I could write like Bob Ellis ellistabletalk/2014/08/02/lying-in-their-teeth/ Lying In Their Teeth Posted by Bob Ellis on August 2, 2014 The number of lies told today by Abbott and Morrison was a bit of a surprise, and 157 people could now sue them, for 350 thousand dollars each. They called them Illegal Maritime Arrivals. But they had arrived nowhere, not even in Australian waters. They said their sad future, a hundred years on Manus, would be a ‘lesson to the people smugglers’. But no people smugglers were involved. They came in their own boat, which Morrison’s people overran, seized, thieved and burnt, illegal action in any jurisdiction. They said they would ‘never live in Australia’, though this, it has been lately proven, is the High Court’s decision. Morrison said some of them would go to Sri Lanka, though Abbott said none of them would. They might, however, end up, he said, in, say, Nauru. Abbott, amazingly, said Nauru was a ‘safe place to live’, a day after an inquiry called it a hive of child suicide. He also said locking up children in a birdshit-smelling hellhole for a hundred years was ‘a humanitarian act’ because other children would not drown getting here. Some of these children, however, had been sent back to Sri Lanka, where their cousins had been tortured and killed. Humanitarian, he said. Most of these children would prefer a risk of drowning to a certainty of death under torture, or twenty years fearing this, or forty, in Sri Lanka. It is now likely both men are in contempt of court, and complicit in child abuse, kidnap, arson, people-trafficking, cyberbullying and what seems on the face of it terrorism, that is, the kidnapping, imprisoning and threatening of harmless people and after weeks of torment delivering them up to enemies likely to kill them. It is probable, though not certain, they will be brought to book, dismissed and imprisoned in due course on some or all of these charges. Till then it would be good if these Tamils, and any others they sent home, sued them.
