I wish I knew, just for one day, what its like to not be obsessed - TopicsExpress

I wish I knew, just for one day, what its like to not be obsessed with numbers. I count the stairs as I climb them. If its sixteen, I will sometimes climb in twos. And if fifteen, in threes (at least I used to do that when I was younger.) I constantly add up the numbers on license plates as I drive around, including the numerical equivalent for the letters (A=1 ... Z=26.) Its unusual to end up with a prime number, but if I do I can easily find another number somewhere on the car (bumper sticker, etc.) to correct the problem. Like all kids, I constantly pestered my parents by repetitively asking them how much further? when we were taking long road trips. But I needed the information to perform the necessary calculations (half way, one quarter, etc.) I still remember the day my dad explained what mile markers were, in order to allow me to answer my own questions. Meaningful numbers everywhere - it was as if he had told me the ground I walked upon was really made of candy. Whenever I find myself setting for long in an unfamiliar location, I count the tiles, blocks, etc. to determine the dimensions of the room. I do these things routinely, almost subconsciously. And ocassionally I become aware of it and it bugs me a bit that I am so overly focused on the damn numbers. So when I watch a video, while Im listening to it I also look at the time. And I think about its meaning. The following video is particularly beautiful. It is one hundred and eight seconds in length. Thats 2² x 3³. Its kind of difficult for me to understand how other people can not be obsessed with such an elegant formula as that.
