I wish everyone would commit to memory the feeling they had when affected by a shared tragedy and apply it to their daily life. Remembering the overall feeling of forgiving others for simply being human and forgetting the gossip, combat and generalization driven by accumulated perception and labels. That perspective thrust upon us by situations beyond our control is something we should allow to mold us into better people. Unfortunately it often wears off in a matter of weeks--or even days--and its businesses as usual. Shallow, misguided, disposable business. In the days following 9-11 you could sense a shift in the way others interacted. We were unified by something much bigger than our daily living. The sorrow, disbelief, sense of solidarity and mortality changed us...for a time. Life and its villains requires us to occasionally step forward and out of our comfort zone. Important situations warrant big decisions. Sometimes we even need to betray our carefully honed character to do what is right or simply necessary. Sometimes we need to rally and war alone. But, at the end of the day, all of the ingredients that made the moment where we suddenly felt joined by a common thread are still applicable. They are still there. We may not (choose) see them, but theyre still looming. We may not agree with our neighbors on politics, our friends on religion or our families on any number of things and dynamics can become heated as a result. Sometimes stereotypes are filled so honestly that you might see a reason for making a judgment; sometimes thats justified. But before you accept an insidious thought or cause a domino effect through a passing action, remember how you felt. Remember what, at that moment, melted away into obscurity and consider. Consider how you spend your time; consider how you contribute; consider how you invest; and, most importantly, consider what and who really matters. Life teaches us many lessons, but sometimes we never go beyond a certain point because we never learn. We forget.
