I wish to ask an honest question: Should intellectual capital be - TopicsExpress

I wish to ask an honest question: Should intellectual capital be free? Many times we are called as resource persons for seminars, workshops, conferences - the works. We break our heads trying to think how to give the best and most meaningful presentation, do a lot of reading up and research, spend quality time to revise our thoughts - literally go through the grind. And then guess what? You make the presentation. It is much appreciated and all you get is a thank you. The organisations that invite you believe they have a right over your time and intellect so they dont even care to pay you a modest honorarium for your work. Some organisations think if they have paid your taxi/flight fare and given you accommodation, then they have done you a huge favour. And mind you many colleges/universities are well funded by the UGC to hold these talk shops. What happen to the money allocated for honorarium for resource persons? Should they not be paid for generating intellectual resource? And who compensates for their time? This happens only in India. Elsewhere institutions and individuals value your contribution in dollars. Time to stop being short-changed. I prefer not to be invited....
