I woke up this morning feeling kinda bad for being so negative - TopicsExpress

I woke up this morning feeling kinda bad for being so negative about the new Miss America. And then I read her statement on her talent choice: The reason why I chose to do that talent is I wanted every single little girl in America to be able to see that you can do that talent — you can do whatever talent you want on national television — even with a red cup — and still be Miss America and have the time of your life. ARE. YOU. KIDDING. ME. See... the problem with this train of thought is damaging. Do we REALLY want to teach children to just do what makes them happy? It doesnt have to be real talent and you dont even have to work hard at it. As long as it makes you happy then good for you... here is your award. You know what makes me happy? Eating an entire bag of Lays in under 5 minutes. Should that be my talent? Dont get me wrong... I want my kids to be happy and to do what they love, but do it to the best of their ability. While I understand that Miss New York is obviously intelligent and well spoken, I just have a hard time buying the story she is selling. I will teach my children, and teach the girls that I coach, that if you want big things in life, you need to be prepared to do big things. Doing, what makes you happy all the time is NOT going to get you there and it SHOULDNT get you there. Hard work, dedication, practice and determination is going to get you what you want. And sadly last night that was not proven. Hence the damaging effect that this thought process can have. Every other state showed their best - from dancing, to singing, to playing an instrument and even to ventriloquism. But sitting on the floor, cross legging, flipping a cup and singing a catchy pop tune was NOT her best. Ok, Im done... stepping off my soap box now...
