I woke up this morning thinking about Gods love for us and realized more than ever that the subject of Gods love is completely overwhelming. Just plain life, as we all know, can at times seem overwhelming. I can tell you for certain that these days I feel completely overwhelmed! However, its not nearly as overwhelming as trying to comprehend Gods love for us. If anything, we should be comforted by the fact that Gods love out-overwhelms everything else. How can we possibly understand the extent of Gods love for us? We have no other satisfactory model to go by. I mean, really, nothing that we can comprehend is adequate. Most of my life I did not see God as a tender loving God. I saw him as I did my dad – a stern man ready to punish me at the first hint of flaw or disobedience. I knew that my dad loved me but I never felt that love in a tender and nurturing way. Through a course of events the last two years I have come to the realization that Gods love stands outside of our understanding. It exists without any external definition. It is incredibly real, incomprehensibly vast, and at the same time personal. I dont think that we can respond fully to Gods love by any ordinary means, because Gods love is no ordinary love. Gods love reaches out to each of us individually with laser-like intensity, calling us to step out of our boats to meet Jesus walking on the water, or to grasp the hem of his garment. Gods love calls us to step out of our story, our concept of reality, into Gods story - into the inconceivable reality of Gods love. I am discovering, though, that Gods love is so much more vast, and different than the love I understood. Still, there is little available, outside of Gods love itself, to clue me in to what its really like. The love of my wife and the love of my children and grandchildren is wonderful, but as great as that love may be, it has limits -- conceivably, there are things that I could do that could affect that love. Gods love remains unaffected. So, while elements of that love can clue me in to little pieces of Gods love, its not adequate to clue me in to either its vastness or its flavor. I leave you with this scripture this morning: And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Death cant, and life cant. The angels cant, and the demons cant. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, and even the powers of hell cant keep Gods love away. Whether we are high above the sky or in the deepest ocean, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. - Romans 8:38,39 I hope as you start your “overwhelming” day today you will above all the hustle and bustle join me in knowing how much and how vast and overwhelming God’s love is for us!
