I woke up this morning to news of the fire now in progress at the Equitable building in downtown Des Moines. That building holds a lot of history for my family, as it was where TMS worked and that job was what brought us to Iowa in 1970. It is a historic landmark built in 1927 and for all the years our family breadwinner worked there it was the tallest building in the city, at 17 stories tall. In recent years the upper floors were vacant and the whole structure was plagued with crumbling and decay. The developer who was trying to renovate it for condominiums and apartments went to prison for improper asbestos disposal, and the future of the building was in question even before the fire. Now...who knows.
