I wonder how NASPA could help directors address this issue of low attendance, and, specifically, in the case of tournaments like this weekends Cambridge, MD, which only has 22 participants. If youll look at the flyer, youll see that the tournament hotel is expensive, in my opinion, based on my recollection of what other tournament hotels have cost over the years. I have not actually gone back and collected any data--this is just a sense that I have. Note that this is not a criticism. Anyway, it makes sense to wonder whether the price of the hotel, combined with the cost to travel down to Cambridge, made this tournament, and others like it, unaffordable to players who otherwise would have preferred to attend. So is there a way for NASPA to have a more active hand in helping directors find an answer to this question? Sure, I can post the question right now, to anybody from the region who might see it, and ask if there are any players who did not attend because of the expense, but no everybody will see this post. Maybe there could be a system that scans the tournament results for players from the last year within a certain distance and sends an email to them asking if they did not attend this tournament because of cost. Let me reiterate that Im not criticising anybody, and, moreover, their is not necessarily a problem here. The mere fact that there are only 22 players might be an non-issue for both the organiser and the other players. But low attendance IS an issue for some directors, as recent posts have shown.
