I wonder how many people remembers Lavern Berkebile, She retired in 1970 after being the childrens librarian for many years, and still has a memorial trust at the library in her name for childrens books and services. I do, I met her when I was researching the family history Towns 1st Such Fatality In More Than Ten Years A 77-year old woman died Wednesday after she was struck by a utility vehicle while walking her dog in the 300 block of South Main Street, Swanton It was the first fatal traffic accident in Swanton in more than 10 years, police said. Miss LaVern Berkebile, of 302 South Main, Swanton was pronounced dead at St. Lukes Hospital, Maumee, three hours after 8 p.m. accident. Police said Miss Berkebile apparently walked out in front of the southbound vehicle driven by James Thompson, 21, of RD 4, Swanton. no citations were issued. Miss Berkebile, a former librarian at the Toledo-Lucas County Library, also was a librarian in the Swanton Local Schools and the Swanton libary. She was a former Sunday school teacher at the Trinity United Methodist Church, in Swanton. Private graveside services will be Friday in Swanton Cemetery. Memorial services will be July 24 ay 3 p.m. in Trinity United Methodist Church. It is requested that any tributes be in the form of contributions to the church or to the school or village libraries
