I wonder how many receptions the team are expected to attend in Glasgow? Clearly (my report as athletics team manager in 1994) I was as enthusiastic as I am about opening ceremonies! 16 * Receptions * 16.1 The role of receptions should be closely examined before the next Games. 16.2 The traditional gathering with the local Manx descendants consumes a small amount of time and we enjoyed some wonderful food. However it was poorly planned that we should sit in the sun to eat during the hottest part of the day on the third day after arrival (the day most athletes were due to start their serious training). 16.3 When the team was announced at the above event, all the officials were mentioned but several members of the team were not. 16.4 A team party was arranged for the final Friday in the village. The team was not aware that guests had been invited from the local Manx population. 16.5 Without doubt officials and competitors have some diplomatic duties to perform at the Games and this includes attending key receptions, such as when Royalty are present. 16.6 The benefits of attending each reception should be closely examined; we should not send people to every reception just to please the hosts. If we had to tell the organisers that our officials could not attend because they were too busy looking after the team there could surely be no complaint. If there was it is the hosts who would have a problem not the Isle of Man team. 16.7 If it is important to attend receptions it should be done by someone in a presidential role, eg Team Commandant. 16.8 It was suggested at the Games that we may need to entertain to reciprocate the entertainment. This should be avoided as it shows the futility of a lot of the entertainment. The receptions become an end in themselves rather than serving a role to support the competitors.
