I wonder if anyone has done any studies on the relationship - TopicsExpress

I wonder if anyone has done any studies on the relationship between hyper-attentiveness and hallucinations. It seems in some regards a distinction predicated mostly on chance. In other words, someone who is exceptionally sensitive to external stimulus, I suspect, would also be exceptionally sensitive to misidentifying internal and external stimulus. There must be some filter, which may simply be based on an array of thresholds, that is tuned such that the binding of internal and external events stays in sync. Maybe the only distinct feature is the filter; a collection of neuronal structures that keep the conscious perception of external stimulus and the actual external stimulus in sync. Also, it would have to gate processing, such that external stimulus isnt processed too quickly, basically a packetizer. When I take even small doses of antihistamines and try to function within my normal environment, I become much more easily agitated, and more likely to have a very particular set of aural hallucinations. Generally, when I am sick, I lose the ability to down regulate to normal people speed. Which is always a good time. :|
