I wonder if self control over what goes in the mouth has any correlation with self control over what comes out? Daniel made up his mind not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked permission to eat other things instead (vegetables and water). Daniel 1:8 Was it so much the food or the fact that Daniel was willing to risk his life... just as he did later in praying three times a day when prayer was against the law? Was it abstaining from rich food that pleased God or the heart of Daniel? In Matt. 15, Jesus basically declared all foods clean. And Peters vision of the sheet with unclean animals in Acts 10 confirmed it. The physical realm is but a shadow of the spiritual realm. What does food represent in Gods eyes? What do we hunger and thirst after? What do we eat that also enters our heart? Out of the heart, the mouth speaks.
