I wonder if they still have books like Modern Graded (English) and Student Companion. Anyway, I recently strayed into a strange company of black snobs. As if to please the few whites guys that were present, the conversation drifted into mocking black accents in speaking English. From there, it moved quickly to something ridiculed as black English by the brothers. They question how can a double-up be a short cut when the path is doubled up. They further wonder how can cowarding mean you ruthlessly dealt with the. Worse still, the word coward is forced into a verb that it is not. My contribution froze the self-hating entertainment. What if double-up means that the short cut doubles up your efficiency and saves the time you may have lost, thereby giving you a double effect? I grew up hearing the elders say you should never corner a coward at his/her home, for there is nowhere else to run to. Under those circumstances, a coward may deal with you in such a manner that they would not want to see you alive again. Thats where the meaning ungikhawadile (youve cowarded me) come from. Our people are extremely creative. Next time you feel like entertaining your friends by ridiculing them, think twice. Besides, the English we worship so much is developed by corrupting other languages like Latin and French. It is now enriching itself by corrupting the indigenous languages. Examples are: mbizos, bantus (note that bantu is already a plural), in KwaLanga (kwa already means at or in), etc. Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all.
