I wonder what would happen after that? Apparently the same is true for Ottawa, Ontario. Most of the land in the area Ottawa is on still technically belongs to the Algonquin people. When the English first arrived in the area, they made an exchange of trade goods for the land, but it was fraudulently sold to them by another rival tribe who pretended to be the owners. England didnt bother to check, and just treated the land as their own. However, present day Algonquins can legally prove that this land has never been surrendered, which means they are still legally in possession of it. Present day Algonquins are uncertain about what to make of this situation, but feel that financial compensation for the leasing of their land would be reasonable.
