I wont stop calling on you, Kiko Pangilinan, until you stop the use of neonics on our poor coconut industry. Neither will Bernie Lopez, who writes again: BIGGEST CLASS ACTION SUIT VS NEONICOTINOID Beekeepers Demand $450 M from Syngenta Warning to the proponents of neonicotinoid under the brand name Starkle, imported from Mitsui Chemical, Inc., a warning to government officials and UPLB Ph. D experts who have endorsed it, including Presidential Assistant Kiko Pangilinan, Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) head, PCA Task Force Sagip head Manohar, PCA consultant Rey Velasco, and others. Beekeepers in Ontario, Canada, have launched one of the biggest ever class action suit against a deadly chemical, neonicotinoid, sold by a notorious pharmaceutical multinational giant Syngenta. Another producer of the chemical is Bayer. Neonicotinoid is blamed for sudden bee ‘massacres’ that have triggered an overall decline in bee population in Canada and the USA. Neonicotinoid attacks the immunity and nervous systems and impairs the reproduction system in insects. “The Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists (CAPA) reported that Ontarios average level of wintering loss of honey bee colonies over the past winter was (a mind-boggling) 58 percent.” The suit was triggered by the Pest Management and Regulatory Agency (PMRA) being “infused with inertia” and having “no sense of urgency,” says John Bennett, National Program Director of the Sierra Club Canada Foundation. It is the exact case in the Philippines, the dangerous partnership of government agencies and giant pharmaceuticals in proliferating banned chemicals. Neonicotinoid is banned in the EU and some places in the US. Here, the PMRA counterpart, Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA), has approved a long list of toxic chemicals banned abroad, including the infamous neonicotinoid in just a few weeks’ time, upon prodding of the same multinationals. There are reports the PCA has surrendered to public pressure in stopping the use of neonicotinoid after an article appeared in Mother Jones, a premier US magazine, about its plans. PCA wanted to use Starkle on a massive scale which has never been done before in the annals of agriculture, injecting it into the trunks of 1.2 million coconut trees (and increasing) to stop an insect infestation that has actually died down due to Glenda and many LPAs. This plan was approved and endorsed by ‘experts.’ The Philippine Coconut community has plans to follow the footsteps of the Beekeeper community of Canada, one grand class action suit against ‘experts’ and government agencies and officials, and against Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. of Japan. --- You can reach Bernie Lope at eastwindreplyctr@gmail
