I won’t seek political office in 2015 –Nyako Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, has said that neither he nor his son would contest for any elective office in 2015. Nyako said this while addressing his supporters in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, on Thursday. He also used the occasion to explain that his decision to dump the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in favour of the opposition All Progressives Congress, was to protest against the prevailing level of injustice and impunity in the PDP. The governor, along with four other governors, namely: Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) on Tuesday announced a decision to defect from the PDP to the APC. Before now, there were unverified reports that the Adamawa State governor was positioning his son, Abdulaziz, to take over from him as governor in 2015. Director of Press and Public Affairs to the governor, Ahmad Sajoh, clarified his principal’s position in a telephone interview with The PUNCH, in Abuja. According to him, the governor has decided to make the clarification to dispel rumours that his struggle was based on selfish interests. He said, “ Governor Murtala Nyako was categorical for the first time that he was not contesting for any position in the next election. “He also said his son is also not contesting for any position in the next election. “This is the first direct categorical statement on the issue of the rumoured scheming to have his son replace him as governor. “The main thrust of his address to the people of Adamawa is that of peaceful co-existence and resistance to injustice, impunity and fair treatment to all.” He justified his movement to APC on the grounds that the PDP had lost focus. He also said his decision to defect to the APC was a personal decision and that his supporters were “free to remain in the PDP if they so desire.” Copyright PUNCH.
