I work with some wonderful people in Bermuda helping to run a program for kids (most are considered at risk by society)-the nuts and bolts of the program is done by our Head Coach Patrick Calow and many other incredible Coaches. One of the hardest things to do is punish a young man or woman where it affects the whole team. However, we have decided that we have a zero tolerance policy for many things and if that line is crossed there are no exceptions-we dont allow the young person to represent either Bermuda or their school. The hardest thing about this is punishing kids that had nothing to do with the offense-we in effect punish them by not letting a player play that would be integral to success. This has been tough at times, but peer pressure now works in a positive way. Our program now has set standards that are higher than any other program on Island-this has caused kids to want to be a part, not pushed them away. Kids like structure and demands put on them, especially young people who dont get that at home due to single parent homes where mother works a couple of jobs and cant effectively police their children. I am proud of Florida State for making the tough call of putting behavior and standards above success (but then again, how do you define success?). FSU is taking a chance of losing a game tonight against a tough Clemson team and perhaps costing themselves a national championship. I admire their decision. As a person who works with kids, we try to explain that there are ramifications for actions-this is an example of that in a positive way that we can show our kids. I love American football-but agree it needs the thugs in it removed. Im not getting into Mr Winstons behavior nor lumping him in with others-I dont know the case, just proud of FSU for doing the right thing.
