I worked at Shop Rite, Met Foods and Foodtown for about 6 years during my high school and college years. I always worked sundays and holidays. Yes, even back then the supermarkets were open on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day for a few hours. I made time and a half and double time wages during those hours worked and a few times I said to myself “hey, this is pretty good money.” Overall I didn’t like having to work those holidays and hours and I know it was one of the driving forces that kept me in college. Later when I worked in the banking industry there were plenty of times when I had to work on a holiday and weekends. I had to work on New Year’s Day (Y2K), I worked on Thanksgiving Day when we had a 24X7 operations and I worked other major holidays like 4th of July and Labor Day. It’s not just retail and financial service workers who have to work holidays. Look at how many Nurses, Doctors, Firemen, Policemen, etc. work major holidays.
