I worked at Woodside News, in the mid sixties handling Newspapers. Remember those? It was the candy store in the middle of the block of 61st. St. between Woodside Ave., on the east side of the block. 39-71 is the address. The store is still there. When I was a kid The Engel family owned it. My dad said it was a Gold Mine. He said that about The Prince Dairy, too. They were right on the other side of the alley next to 39-71. I worked for three men that bought it from the Engels. Sam Schneidmill, Vic, and Norm. Dont remember their last names, but I went to school with Sams son Irwin, so I remember. I made 12 bucks a week. Yup- that was 1963-66. I waited each night and met the Daily News truck, and took the papers off, paid the driver, and loaded them onto the stand. I worked four hours on Saturday nights assembling the Sunday Papers. People stood in line for the evening edition, sometimes AROUND THE BLOCK- where the Woodside Furrier (now Metro PC) was. The store then, was a full on soda fountain, and mini- luncheonette with a grille and deep fryer. They had cigars in a real humidor room, and magazines, and LOTS of candy, and big pretzels. The egg creams were great. That is something well never see the likes of again, and thats sad. Im glad I lived in that time. Man, I ate a lot of candy!
