I worry constantly about the safety of people renting apartments in Manhattan. Having experienced a middle of the night gushing water leak running through every floor and all the electrics in one building - which necessitated evacuation with a small child, and currently experiencing a bad water leak in the bathroom ceiling - reported, mended and leaking again, Ive formed a dim view of the attitudes of landlords over here. It seems they instruct their superintendents and maintenance crews to avoid spending money and if money needs to be spent then make it the barest minimum. Tenants who make a fuss tend to be harassed out of their homes and theres an atmosphere of fear about complaining. I have no doubt that the hapless folk in this apartment block will have reported the smell of gas repeatedly.
