I would like to address something that definitely needs to be - TopicsExpress

I would like to address something that definitely needs to be said, and I honestly hope that you will ALL listen. HUMILITY As of late, I have been hearing A LOT of talk about players being superior to one another, and most of this talk has been extremely rude. (Honestly, it hasnt even just been lately, but ALL YEAR to this point.) So, I would like to quash a few myths and things right now because this kind of talk shouldnt even be existent between us. 1) The Band Period you are in DOES NOT judge your playing ability. I DO NOT care what youve heard, but Concert Periods are more conforming to scheduling rather than ability. Yes, at one time 6th period was planned to be a Competitive Band, but that has not become the case. There has been A LOT of gloating about this, and you need to stop being so prideful about your period and actually WORK to make yourself better, rather than try and degrade others. An egocentric attitude will not get you anywhere, and honestly is one of the ugliest charachteristics I have ever seen. 2) Chair Positions DO NOT mean superiority over the rest of your section, either. Chair positions are based on ONE , I repeat, ONE try-out every some many seasons. Your chair ranking does not reflect your abilities and growth over the seasons or years. Chair positions are not meant for you to get a status complex, but more for you to challenge yourself to achieve more experience and remain equal with your section. 2.5) Being first or last chair means NOTHING in our band if you choose not to appreciate WHY we have chairs. If you are a Section Leader (1st Chair), the title does NOT define you. Your actions do. A Leaders priorities should be to help a group grow and get better, along with their own abilities. It does not make you the best player ever, so please get rid if that stigma. The same applies to lower chairs. Although someone may rank above you, you are not a weaker link. Once again, your actions truly speak VOLUMES above your words. That is all I have to say for now. I really hope that all of you, especially Underclassmen, will read this and take the advice I offered. I know half of you may not care what I have to say, but this lesson will make or break you in the future.
