I would like to congratulate Pakistan Army leadership for obtaining a total surrender from Pakistani politicians without firing a single shot. They should be congratulated even more for getting the Pakistani Supreme Court to surrender to them all its powers (see this weeks photos from Islamabad). Prime Ministers declaration that we are on the same page was illustrated perfectly in the attached cartoon. The first step towards fresh militarization of Pakistan was achieved with the consent of the Supreme Court announcing the formation of military courts in the country to ensure speedy trials of the terrorists. Pakistani military for the last six decades has considered itself above the law of the land because of a corrupt judicial and constitutional system in the country. It has been more effective when it exercises its power behind the scenes through its formidable intelligence agencies, ISI, and MI. It takes over the direct rule in the country only when the politicians, bureaucrats, and judges are completely discredited because of street riots and the general breakdown of law and order. These conditions have been present in the country for quite some time but the Peshawar massacre of innocent children has pushed aside all subtleties. Pakistan military has been following the American and NATO model of fighting militant Muslim terrorists in the tribal areas. This model has failed miserably in Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. There is no guarantee it will succeed in Pakistan either. I have explained before over the last three years that Muslim terrorism is based on an ideology and not on predictable combat tactics. This ideology is funded by the same people who are partners with NATO in its combat missions. Militant ideology did not come about because of 9/11 or its aftermath. It has been there for more than a century and can be traced directly to the colonial and neo colonial policies of Western countries and it has only magnified in size since the creation and expansion of Israel. Missiles and drones cannot defeat this ideology. For that you need clean hands and a correct interpretation of Quran and Sunnah in the light of teachings and actions of the Prophet, his companions, and members of his family. That has not been done by the illegitimate rulers imposed on Muslim countries. Setting up of military courts in Pakistan is not going to solve this problem. A speedy trial is never a fair trial. I have been teaching and training military officers for the last forty years. I can tell you most of them are as smart and intelligent as their counterparts in the civilian ranks. But they have little or no training in law. They do not understand the value of legal procedures. The purpose of a regular court trial is to bring out the Truth so that Justice can be done. Killing a terrorist with a drone missile or hanging him in public takes seconds. Without a proper trial, it does not serve Justice or serve as a deterrent to others. It only produces more terrorists.
