I would like to drive this point home to people who make fun of my Bisaya-accented Tagalog, as well as those who think that my English isnt up to their standards of perfection. My accent and my linguistic capabilities DO NOT define who I am and what I do. It irks me to know that my being from a region of the Philippines outside of Manila is associated with running jokes about househelp and country bumpkins who cant hide their funny accent. The social stigma of being Bisaya is one of many things I feel that keeps the nation divided. So I have an accent. Doesnt everybody in the Philippines have one? How does having an accent define your social standing? And why is it such a big deal? There are people who, no matter how little they earn, take pride in their jobs. And that is something nobody has the right to take away from them just because they have an accent. *drops mic*
