I would like to highlight and salute the heroic acts of different Americans who made two polar opposite decisions on the same issue. First, the doctor in California who recently returned from west Africa. He voluntarily submitted to a 21 day quarantine so as to put his neighbors at ease. He said the additional 21 days was just an extension of the mission. Very noble. But also, the nurse in Maine refused to submit to a quarantine and a judge in Maine said the state failed to meet the burden needed to impose one on her. Her argument was that she has been tested for ebola and does not have it. She has no symptoms and is submitting to health department checks. Both of the individuals should be applauded. One for his willingness to go the extra mile in service, the other for demanding that reason and science trump fear and paranoia. America is still the secular light of the world. Americans need to go to west Africa to solve a crisis no one else can. But then, we need to treat our heroes with the honor they deserve, not as pariahs.
