I would like to post an unbiased history of my motherland. Here is what I have researched and found out. The name of my note is My Beloved Homeland. I have been reading a lot of comments about the Vietnam War and I am very surprised as to how many people there are who do not know the actual causes of the war, including other Vietnamese. There were so many Vietnamese who were against Ho Chi Minh because he killed thousands of people. They forget that the South Vietnamese government also had killed and tortured thousands of people. Both sides were under the control of a dictatorship. South Vietnam was NEVER a democracy, only an anti-communist fascist government. If the South Vietnamese government had allowed free elections, it knew that Ho Chi Minh would win by a landslide. Why?? Ho Chi Minh was a nationalist first and then a communist. He was not a communist at first, but a neutralist. He did not care about communism or democracy. All he cared about was our independence from France and a unified country. Here is what most Americans do not know. He asked the USA for help first, of all nations. He knew the US Constitution was very good and wanted it for the Vietnamese people. I learned from a fellow Viet adoptee that Ho Chi Minh wanted democracy for my homeland at first. But, the USA turned him down. He respected George Washington, his idol, not Lenin. That should tell you something about Ho Chi Minh. The movie, Heaven & Earth, is a great movie to watch if you truly want to know about the Vietnam War. It explained what happened during the war and what really went on. The South Vietnamese government tortured people whom they thought were sympathizers of the communists, even if they werent. The Viet Cong did the same, sometimes to the same people the South Vietnamese government tortured. Either case, the people were the ones who suffered during the war. No one wins in a war ever!! The Vietnam War was a war for independence. Of all nations, the USA should have known that and that it was not about communists vs non-communists. If I had been older, I would have supported Ho Chi Minh because I would have wanted my country to be independent from other foreign nations. The Vietnamese deserved to be independent as a people. Because the USA turned him down, he was forced to turn to the only other superpower, the USSR, a communist nation. So, he became communist because of that. If the USA had supported him in his fight for independence, Vietnam would have been a stronger, richer, and democratic country today, instead of being a very poor communist one. Here are two things that most Americans do not know also. When the Chinese and South Vietnamese fought over the Spratly Islands during the Vietnam War, North Vietnam remained neutral because it did not want either to win. The Chinese and North Vietnamese hated each other, just as the South Vietnamese hated the Chinese. It also wanted to claim the Spratly Islands, but after the war. It also knew that it would fight to the last man, woman, and child if necessary to have independence. The second thing was that there was a political party that wanted democracy for my homeland, but it joined Ho Chi Minh because they also wanted independence from France. North Vietnam got aid from the Chinese because China did not want an American influence on its borders. Most of the aid to the North Vietnamese actually came from the USSR. The Vietnamese people are a very proud people, just like any other ethnic group. :) Nationalism and independence is more powerful than any ideology. History has shown that time and time again. When people want to fight for independence, they fight until they get it. So, the lesson is NEVER EVER FIGHT AGAINST NATIONALISM AND INDEPENDENCE!! Like every nation in the world, Vietnam deserve to be an independent country, to govern itself. I am very proud to be Vietnamese and no one can ever take that from me!! :) Long live Vietnam!! I also learned something about the city I was born in. Saigon was not a Vietnamese name, but was adopted by the French. The original name of Saigon was Prey Nokor, a Cambodian village. When the Cambodians allowed the Vietnamese to settle in the village, the Vietnamese took it from Cambodia and renamed it Gia Định, which was the original name of Saigon. I never knew that Saigon was the adopted name from the French. I might start calling it Gia Dinh from now on, instead of Saigon now!! LOL I know that most, if not all, Vietnamese will always call it Saigon. I miss my motherland so very much more and more now to the point where I would LOVE to live there once again!!
