I would like to say that censorship works in many ways. I will let the readers figure out how it does in the film industry because I know that we have not yet created an alternative system that would give some filmmakers the freedom they need to really say what is on their minds. A film that was part of the African Diaspora International Film Festival in Paris this year narrates how many African-American women who went behind the camera did not succeed in having a career even though they were talented filmmakers. Sisters in Cinema by Yvonne Welbon is a very educational film regarding the endeavors of filmmakers that have a real voice. Independent filmmakers are those who are in general inclined to say things that studio filmmakers will not say. The bigger the budget the more watered down the story is in most cases. The real story is that independent filmmaking in a rare and difficult enterprise that is not very popular today as the aim in films is to make money not to tell good stories. For those who critical of Fruitvale Station I suggest they check Otomo by Frieder Schlaich from Germany, the film depicts a similar story about an African man killed in Germany by the local police. it is available at africandiasporadvd
