I see some people sharing their experiences with the hospital on here and Id like to share mine. They arent necessarily good or bad... Its more like comforting. While I agree that MANY changes need to be made, Im sure that those are in the works. Im 25. I was delivered at Poteau by Dr. Willis. But all my life, its had a bad rep. I was a healthy kid, so I didnt really get it. 4 years ago, my son, Carter, was born (not at Poteau). He has a decent case of Spastic Quadreparesis Cerebral Palsy, chronic lung disease with frequent infections, and lately his seizure disorder has been getting worse. Needless to say, I get it now. We know theyre no specialists. We dont expect them to have all the equipment necessary for him or for them to be able to admit him - and that is perfectly fine for us. We get specialist and PICU care in Tulsa. What we need from EOMC is emergency care and so far, they have been able to deliver that to him adequately all but one time and Carters visits typically end in being transferred. I think a lot of people forget that its not a major hospital and its not there for treating everything. Theyre there for treating a wide, general range of common issues. We dont go far out into the county for fear that we wont be able to make it to the ER in time or for EMS to make it in time. If we lose our emergency room, we would have to move closer to a hospital. I dont even want to think about what would happen if EMS couldnt stabilize one of Carters seizures in time to make it to Fort Smith. I feel like a lot of people dont really care because most patients are the elderly or theyre generally healthy and they dont need healthcare, so they need to see how losing EOMC would affect the other parts of the population as well - and Carter is one of them.
