I would like to start by saying Gila Kasla-Thank You to ALL of the people that have taken the time out of their day to make comments and view my rendition/spin of the Canadian flag. I am very taken back, shocked, excited, happy, overwhelmed and also humbled by the sheer amount of people that have seen the posting and provided comments/support on this design. The comments and “likes” are still pouring in and I am very grateful that so many of you are enjoying the work that I put into my art. I am very fortunate to have such a rich family in their willingness to teach and share their knowledge and expertise with me, which has enabled me to create an art style of my own. It has given me the ability to share my artist abilities and to them all I am thankful. A number of people have asked for the significance of the actual designs within the flag. The 2 designs on the outer portions are K’utala-Salmon. Salmon are known for its dependability and renewal. It’s known to Kwakwaka’wakw people as a Provider. Salmon is a symbol of fertility and good health. The salmon is the source of life for our people and we depend upon the salmon as our main food source in the past, present and hopefully the future. Salmon for the Kwakwaka’wakw Nations are typically represented by Twins and my family is fortunate enough to have twins in our family, that being my mother and her sister. The design within the actual maple leaf is of a simple ovoid shape with an eye and mouth and surrounded by some split “U” shapes. Again Thank you all for your comments and interest in my artwork!!! I am so pleased I have been able to reach out to so many people. -Mulidzas-Curtis Wilson
