I would like to take this one and only opportunity to encourage - TopicsExpress

I would like to take this one and only opportunity to encourage all of those who either attended or had some other personal connection to Mount Sterling High School to attend the planned reunion of October 18, 2014. I think there are a number of reasons why we should all make a special effort for this particular event. First, as a practical matter, I think this one MUST succeed: If it doesnt, I personally think it will be hard to mount another such effort: People have tried very hard, the timing of the completion of the MSHS renovation is especially apt, and none of us is getting any younger. Its now or never, in my opinion. I think the second and more important issue is a MORAL one: Each and every one of us owes this place something, and we owe each OTHER something. Some of us started with a lot, some with less, some were popular, others less, some of us have gone on to bigger things, others not so much. Nevertheless, it all started for every one of us right here. The peculiar mix that gathered itself at MSHS reacted upon each one of us in a way that made us uniquely what we went on to become, for better or for worse. We ALL share not only in our OWN deeds and misdeeds, but in the deeds and misdeeds of each and every one of our classmates, from the day the doors opened until the day they closed. We all participated equally in a special experience that will never repeat itself, and can live on only within each of us for as long as we allow it. I dont mean to suggest that I think everything was perfect, or that everything from that era is best viewed thru a film of nostalgia. That attitude has its place, but that isnt really MY approach, and I dont want to pretend that it is. Some of the best AND worst things Ive ever done, some of the biggest mistakes Ive ever made, and many of my lifes hardest lessons and disappointments came in those days. It was in many unspoken ways a personally painful and difficult time: I hurt some good people in very crude ways, and I had my own too-delicate feelings wounded as well. 50 years later, I remember each and every incident (so help me!), and I daily recall the Lords mutual admonition to forgive... trespasses. Amen. The point isnt that it was perfect, but that it was GOOD, and that it was uniquely OURS, and thats reason enough to celebrate it proudly and together.
