I would like to thank Greg Jungman, Stephen Tyler Holman, and Mayor Rosenthal (and the other council members I dont know) for asking the right questions at the Oversight Committee meeting on the Three Unrelated Ordinance. Grace and composure in the face of some overt and overly aggressive non-neighborly attitudes on on the other side of this issue. I must say, I was put off by the city attorney (did not catch his name) who posited that we (the City, yes he was speaking for me, though unelected) must take up with those who have the most important financial stake, the landlords, since they earn their money on their properties. Really? The city attorney believes that? I counter that the most important financial interest is the collective interest of the resident property owners. For the common citizen, the biggest asset in their financial portfolio is usually their house. So, maintaining the property value of a primary residence is the most important financial consideration, not a landlord increasing the population density of his/her cash cow to earn more on the backs of residents. I was appalled at Reigers threats that landlords would dig deeper in to try to be as inaccessible as possible (Guess what? They are hard to find because they dont even live in the fine State of Oklahoma.) if they dont get their way on this. Excuse me??? They threaten to be even less neighborly because the City expects them to comply with laws on the books when they purchased their properties? And so, I offer my suggestion for compromise with landlords: Dear Landlord, if you personally owned the rental property before the Three Unrelated Persons ordinance was put in place in 1954, you can apply for a variance. If you bought or inherited the property after that date, you need be patriotic, think of the good and safety of the City and her neighborhoods, and willingly and joyfully comply with the law.
