I would like to thank everyone who has supported me with your thoughts, prayers, cards and care packages during my bone marrow transplant and recovery from leukemia. It has been very humbling to find that I have many more friends than I had realized. There have been people from my past who have reached out to me, acts of kindness from total strangers and many of you I know have supported me silently. All the postings on Facebook with the t-shirts was awesome. We could feel the support over all these miles and it has been very important in the success of my journey. God bless you all. I have been released from the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center to return home after being treated here since February 3rd. My cancer is in total remission and I will be able to complete my recovery at home and at the University of Iowa Hospitals. There will be numerous trips to Houston in the next two years for check ups but we will gladly live with that. My immune system will be suppressed for a year or longer and there are many restrictions on what I can do. I will also be on a restricted diet because of bacteria. I am very susceptible to infection of any kind. I have to avoid crowds, children, dust and dirt and of course anyone who is sick. I will need to wear a mask and gloves much of the time. Do not be offended if I cannot shake hands or give hugs. I have been instructed to use the Obama bump instead. These are all minor inconveniences that I will accept for a second chance at life. Thank you to our children and their spouses. Without their support we would not have been able to be treated at this special hospital so far from home. They took care of so many things at work and home for us. Their visits also made the time here go so much faster. Thank you to a very special friend who did so much for us. You know who you are. Finally, thanks most of all to my loving wife Melia. She has barely left my side since this started and has slept on couches, uncomfortable chairs and even on the hospital floor to remain with me during this process. She has been my primary nurse and caregiver through it all. She knows more about my medications than my doctors and nurses. During the last six months I believe she has disinfected the whole state of Texas. The outcome would not have been the same without her. I love her more than ever and I believe she has saved my life. We cant wait to get on the plane tomorrow and come back home.
