I would say about 5 times a week, I have an artist tell me Im waiting to find the right label for this project. Im afraid some of you are living in the past, as someone once famously said. There is no cavalry coming. There are only a handful of decent labels run by honorable people left and they are overburdened, and mostly facing epic struggles. My point is delaying moving forward on anything because there is no label involved is ridiculous. Even if a label got involved, any sort of advance these days for non-ultra-mainstream musicians is probably going to be low -- $750 to $5000 (at the very upper end). You can probably raise that yourself if you try hard enough. A publicist? That will run you $1000-$3000. If you have a label, that money will still come out of your own pocket anyway. Its lovely if you can magically get one of the few labels left to be a positive part of something you do, but the truth is, its profoundly unlikely. You need to take your own initiative and chances. More than ever, your destiny is in your own hands.
