I wouldnt class myself as a Russell Brand fan per se, but Ive just finished Revolution and I found it to be engaging, funny and sincere. His intentions are clearly good........ and (on reflection) the criticism hes received has been lazy, desperate and mostly inaccurate. On a personal level, I like his non partisan approach to spiritual concepts, and now that hes curtailed the bulk of his coercive, socialist rhetoric - the stuff that involves someone kicking your door in if you want to exercise your right to be left alone - I largely found myself in agreement with his politics............. I especially liked the David Graeber chapter, with his dream to create a thousand autonomous institutions that can gradually take over the business of organising everyday life, pretty much ignoring the authorities, until gradually the whole apparatus of state comes to seem silly and unnecessary - and RBs depiction of the Westboro Baptist Church as situationist hillbillies. To claim its confused or lacking depth is to totally miss the point. This book will serve as a tea towel round the lid of a previously un-openable jar for a great deal of people...........I think Ant and Dec should get on with writing their Society of the Spectacle.
