I wouldnt normally post anything about politics, but when it affects the history of Illinois, I cant help it. When Governor Pat Quinn came into office in 2009, he made a big show of reversing closings to state historic sites that had been carried out by Governor Rod Blagojevich -- who ended up in prison. But as time passes, little about Illinois changes. The Illinois General Assembly has now announced a belt tightening plan that will cut back on the operations of 13 Illinois historic sites (including locations connected to Abraham Lincoln) like Cahokia Mounds, the David Davis Mansion, Lincoln Log Cabin, Bishop Hill and the first State Capitol in Vandalia. Why is it that historic sites are always the first to feel the cuts? Why do politicians think history doesnt matter? Perhaps its because Illinois history shows just how corrupt politics in this state have always been... Id suggest cutting back on the salaries of the do-nothing politicians who cant manage to get anything accomplished instead of making our history harder to find for future generations. [okay, off the soapbox now]
