I write to invite you to attend our forthcoming conference entitled World War 1: opposing wars of empire then and now. The opening session will be 1914-2014 - a century of militarism and war. Another session will examine the current situation in the Asia-Pacific region under the title the US pivot to Asia and the encirclement of China. A third session will consider Venezuela - a case study in destabilisation. In addition to Venezuela and the Far East, the conference will feature the growing threat of all-out war in Iraq and Ukraine and the fundamental threat to the stability of these regions. We have three outstanding speakers - Kate Hudson (general secretary of CND), Jenny Clegg (author of a recent book on China) and Neil Findlay MSP (last year attended the presidential elections in Venezuela as an international observer). The conference will be chaired by Green Party councillor Martha Wardrop. The conference will take place on Saturday 5 July from 10.30am to 1.30pm in the Renfield Centre, 260 Bath Street, Glasgow. The conference will hopefully provide some relief from an extavagant programme of official events which attempt to glorify World War 1 as a necessary war to resist German militarism. The event will start at 10.30am and finish at 1.30pm leaving plenty of time for those who plan to go onto the Peoples Assembly event in support of the NHS at 2pm that day.
