I wrote about the fine art of kong stuffing in my last newsletter and it received such good feedback I thought it would be a good post for our Facebook page too! With my dogs winter rest from agility, and the nights long and dark, there are many times when I needed something to get her to just chill out and relax. A good friend reminded me of stuffed frozen kongs and how they can captivate a dog (especially if you get the XL sized Kong) for a good hour. So I set myself out to create some good recipes and it really doesnt matter whether you need to settle a crazy puppy, or a bored high-energy sport dog like mine, stuffed kongs will do the trick! Ive found that plain yogurt makes a good base and to that you can add pretty much anything that is healthy and yummy for dogs - just pack and freeze over night. Ive mixed in organic canned pumpkin, a few tablespoons of a high quality canned dog food (the other night my dogs had rabbit!!), some left over humus, peanut or almond butter, the scraps and drippings from a batch of cooked chicken hearts I made up for training treats, unsweetened applesauce...use your imagination. My next batch, Im going to stuff a whole sardine down the middle! I keep four stuffed kongs in the freezer now at all times and anytime I need a night of quiet, my dogs get a special treat. Simply Natural, one of our favourite stores, also sells the West Paw Toppl cubes, perfect for stuffing if keeping a kong up-right in your freezer is a challenge. The Toppl might be the best stuffing toy on the market since it is flat on the bottom. This will be my next toy purchase. https://westpawdesign/dogs/dog-toys/zogoflex-dog-toys/toppl-treat-toy Perfect for rainy nights or when guests come over!
