I wrote an article not too long ago that was published in the Claremont Courier on Isolation and Cognitive Stimulation. Recent statistics on aging show as many as 45% of seniors are divorced, separated or widowed, leaving many to live alone. In addition to these statistics, AARP reports, nearly 90% of seniors want to age in place. You may wonder why these statistics are important. They are important because older people who live alone are particularly vulnerable to social isolation or loneliness due to loss of friends and family, mobility or loss of income. With social isolation and loneliness comes a myriad of health issues. Studies have shown a direct correlation between lonelieness and disability, cognitive ability cancer, higher blood pressure, stroke and heart disease. A recent study by John Capioppo, a psychologist and Director for the Center for Cognitive and Social Neurocience at the University of Chicago reveal that older people who are extremely lonely and socially isolated can have real and traumatic effects, increasing their chance of premature death by 14%. REAL Connections is a great solution for seniors to stay socially connected, avoid the risk of isolation and increase cognitive stimulation.
