I wrote on one of my other posts that it did SEEM excessive when police fired on that death by cop guy two weeks ago, then continued to fire even after he was down. This article makes many good points, one of them is that a suspect can and often will continue to engage after having taken a number of rounds. Until you can verify that the person is, in fact, down for the count you have to assume they are still capable of hurting you. This is also why you secure and handcuff a person even if you suspect they are dead or disabled. Yes, escalation of force obviously needs to be reviewed more frequently with many of the officers out there if not all. Yes, I think all officers should be wearing digital cameras that record the entirety of their interactions with the public. Yes, there are some really really bad cops out there and we need to do a better job of training and screening them to avoid those that behave in abhorrent ways. All that said, when an individual is coming at you with the intent to do you harm, whether with fists, knives, sticks, rocks or guns, you have an inherent right to defend yourself. You only point your weapon at things you intend to shoot and if you shoot you are intending to kill. There are no warning shots.
