I wrote this a couple of years ago to my mom for mothers day. Here is a re-share :) A lot of my facebook friends (and regualar friends) know my mother.....Sylvia Lentz. Let me tell you about the lady that Im proud to call my mother. My mother was born in Eastern Limestone County to Walter and Jane Turner. Mother attended East Limestone High School and then later enrolled in Athens State College. I can remember being real little and going over to my grandmothers house in Athens and seeing all of the old pictures of my mother. Wow.......was she pretty! Long blond hair and blue eyes. No wonder my dad picked her. I always (and still think) my mother is the prettiest woman in the world. My earliest memories of my mother are of her singing. She would sing all of the time. Believe it or not I can remember back to age 3 and can still hear my mother singing All I have to do is Dream by the Everyly Brothers. As a matter of fact, mother taught me to sing harmony by getting me to sing with her on that song when I was little. She would sing in the shower, sing cleaning the house, sing in the church chorus and sing and countless weddings. Mother sang with the Athens State University Choir and was selected as the May Queen of Athens State. She then left college to get married and worked with Dr. Werner Von Braun at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville. She tells the story of meeting President Kennedy and Dr. Von Braun while she was carring me. I can remember she would take me to Ms. Englands in the early morning hours for babysiting. I couldnt wait until mother came home. A lot of people have asked me where I get my musical and social talents from. Yep.......you guessed it. My mother. When I was 8 years old my mother took me to Forbes Piano Company and said pick out a piano. You are going to learn how to play. I thought......NOPE, NOT ME!! THATS FOR SISSYS. Well, mother pressed me to play and even whipped my tail on several occassions to make sure I learned my piano lessons. I can still play the song Mule Ride to this day because she made me learn that song note for note and wouldnt let me leave the piano until it was right. I would sometimes break out into some Jerry Lee Lewis Music and she would always come into the room and get on to me for not learning my lessons correctly. Sometimes I would miss a note but she read music and could tell when I was messing up. My mother was very involved in the community when I was growing up. She headed up the Mothers Baseball Booster Club, Band Parents, Rogersville Recreation Center, Vacation Bible School, City Tennis Team and several other events. My mother was on the original committee that brought the first ambulance to Rogersville. My mother is such a strong and smart person. She has battled cancer three times and just recently went through a cornea transplant. My mother is one of the smartest people I know. She graduated from Athens State College, Alabama A&M, University of North Alabama with a BA, Masters and E.D.S Degree. Unforturnately her smarts didnt wear off on me. For you that know my mother.......she can be very funny. She is always joking around and making fun of my dad most of the time. This is where I get my sense of humor. She is always laughing and goofing off. There was (and is) never a dull moment in the Lents houshold with my mother around. The reason Im writing this tribute is because I know my mom will not be around too much longer and I want the whole world to know how much I love her. She has been b my side through thick an thin. She is a very strong woman and that has spilled over into my life. My mother has instilled in me to love each and every person I come in contact with and to always try and help them. This is where I get my desure to help in my community. My mother still checks on me even at my age of 46. Its sort of funny, if Im out on a fire call it never fails that my mother will drive by in her car to check on me. It doesnt matter what time it is. We can have a fire call @ 3 in the morning and like clock work she knows Ive left and somehow knows where the fire is. I guess she is scared a lot more since I got hurt in the fire department three years ago. I can remember arriving at Huntsville Hospital the night of my firefighting accident and my mother was waiting for me in the operating room. She came up to me with a concern I had never seen before. I was broken from head to toe but she smiled and put her hand on my head and said are you alright son?. I said yes but that was a lie. I didnt want her to worry but boy was I scared. It calmed me so much to see my mother these with me. She and my dad stayed at the hospital non stop when I was in ICU and made a daily drip (everyday) to Bham to visit me while I was @ Spain Rehab. For that, Im thankful. In closing..............I love you mother. You have made me the person I am today. Im the luckiest man in the world to be able to call you my mother. Yep.......Im a blessed man. I love you mother. Your son, Morris
