I wrote this from my sleeping bag last night and destined not to change anything or edit it. The Badlands This one will probable be long. I parked on the side of Big foote road (it has an E on the street sign) I made my way on foot into the heart of the badlands in hope to find a geo-stash that Terrence Malick (someone I really look up to) and Martin Sheen made together when they made the film The Badlands The story is they each put one item in an old can along with 11 others that worked on the film. Anyone that finds the can is allowed to take 1 item but they have to leave an item. After walking for a few hours I saw many beautiful sights and felt like a changed man. Then I came across a 10 point buck that was being eaten by a large black bird. It was laying on the ground with open wounds. It wasnt able to get up and I truly felt bad. I looked for my buck knife but I had left it in my jeep and I didnt want to shoot it and have people come looking for the source of the sound. So I used the bayonet on the end of my rifle. As soon as I walked away the bird reclaimed the corpse of the deer. After walking a mile or so I came across a sleeping shelter on the ground. I could see that someone was in it but they werent moving. I was really afraid they would be dead or close dyeing. I called to them and a women responded and got out in a panic. The first thing she had to have seen was a man holding a rifle with blood on the end of it. Her name was Sarah and she was very untrusting. We made hot tea and exchanged stories for a bit. She asked me not to post a photo of her but she took one for me (of me) After I left her I started noticing a lot of wild life, I even fed a mountain goat/ ram an apple. There were tones of gofers. I saw a few wild ferrets and buffalo. Once I got to the area I thought the stash would be I saw an opening on the side of the slop but there was no way I could access it. I thought about walking back to my jeep to get a few ropes but it was getting late and my jeep was about 10-12 miles away. After a very close inspection of that hillside I found a second access point that led to the same cave/den. There it was, An old OD green ammo can (probable from Vietnam) I opened it to find 15 items in total. My 3 favorite were a pocket knife with the Russian flag engraved in it, a rabbits foot and a large tooth. I ended up taking the tooth and leaving behind my old airborne wings. I put the can back up in its den that was very well hidden in and well keep from water damage. I started to head back but as soon as the sun set the temperature dropped drastically. I thought I could push threw but everything started to hurt and the wind felt like it was cutting. All the snot that ran down my face froze. So I made a coffin trench and set up my sleeping bag. It started to snow right as I finished the wall to block out the wind. The last temperature reading that I took was 9°. So here I lie in my bag hardly believing how therapeutic this day has been and how truly happy I am. I think everyone should come experience this place. Its like another world. A world without the bullshit we have made.. I tried to send someone a few messages from the highest elevated points. Im not sure she got them but I hope she did. I got a lot of real thinking done out here and am truly happy, I only wish I could have taken someone with me. It feels selfish to have this experience all to myself. Goodnight
